Building block 6 of 17Stage: Build

Founder office hours

Scheduled, bookable time with senior people, instead of favours.

What it is

Office hours are fixed slots when founders can bring a specific question to a fractional leader. They replace the unpredictable “ask a mentor if one is free”.

Booked in advance with a short note on the question, they are short, focused and recorded, so advice is not lost.

Why it is needed

Why an incubator needs this.

  • Founders need answers at the moment of need

A decision about a contract or a hire cannot wait weeks for a mentor.

  • Predictable beats generous

Scheduled slots can be planned and reported on. Favours cannot.

  • Specific questions get better answers

A short note in advance means time is spent on the question, not on background.

  • A record of support delivered

Logged sessions show the incubator what help was actually given.

Illustrative case study

Thursday afternoons that replaced email chains

Illustrative. This is a fictional composite written to show how the model works. The people, startup and details are invented. It is not a real client, and no result or outcome is claimed or guaranteed.

The situation

Founders emailed mentors with urgent contract and technology questions and waited days for replies. (Fictional composite.)

What was done

  • Fixed a weekly block with a legal, a technology and a compliance slot.
  • Asked founders to submit one question when booking.
  • Sent a three-line note after each session.

What changed

  • Questions were answered in days rather than weeks.
  • Founders arrived with specific questions.
  • The incubator could see which topics came up most.

What to watch out for

  • Open-ended sessions with no question.
  • No notes, so advice is forgotten.
  • Slots that clash with classes.
Advisory sessions only. Legal representation and other reserved services are separate.
Subject to selection, availability, eligibility and third-party terms. Not every block is included in every plan: capacity and scope are stated in the subscription, and nothing is unlimited.
Questions

Common questions.

How much time does each startup get?

It depends on the plan. Nothing is unlimited: hours and credits are set in the subscription.

Is it legal representation?

No. Office hours are advisory. Regulated work is handled separately by authorised professionals.
